And when I say "avoid" I mean, being super judgemental about it and kinda bitchy to people who used it....."like, what's wrong with you ignorant neanderthals??".
Recently, I heard my 7 year old tell my 5 year old "Whoa! We don't say fat. That's a bad word!"....
And so here's the f*cked up thing, in trying teach my girls NOT to judge their bodies and the bodies of others, I've inadvertently taught them that fat is bad and undesirable and negative. The underlying message being:
if they have a body type that carries more fat (hello delicious thighs!!)
or if they ever go through a period where they gain more fat
or get called fat
or WHATEVER, that there is something wrong with them....
In trying my best to help my daughter's develop a solid positive body image I've perpetuated a super negative cultural story line that encourages them to judge themselves, and others, unfairly.
Thankfully kids don't remember anything from before 7 years old, right? Right??
