Measuring tapes, calipers, and bathroom scales are the big cuplrits....though body composition technology and good ole BMI fall into this category as well. If you are eating intuitively and honouring your body WHY would you ever need to use these tools? If you're respecting your body, (i.e. feeding it according to it's needs & wants and moving it regularly) what is the point of stepping on a scale?
NO GOOD WILL COME OF IT!!! I promise you.
If you are hoping to improve body image via a dieter's tool, here's what's going to happen:
A. the dieter's tool will tell you you have made the progress you've been desiring..in which case body image may improve, for a few minutes/hours/days but then the fear will set in....how to maintain the results? How do you keep the results coming? Getting body image improvements from a scale never lasts long....why is that? Because body image isn't actually about weight or shape.
B. the dieter's tool will tell you you haven't made the progress you've been desiring....in which case even a fairly solid sense of self can be rattled. If you have a dieting history, hopping on a scale can derail months of efforts to really listen to your hunger/full cues and respect your body's needs. It will trigger the need for MORE external validation: a meal plan, and exercise regime, a list of foods to restrict, etc.
So ditch that scale. Focus instead on well you feel and how well you are taking care of yourself....that tiny shift of attention will immediately start to change how you view your body.
How can you feel good in ill-fitting clothing that are old, out of date, misshapen, and unflattering?
A woman who loves her body, wants to dress it well. So act like a woman who loves herself (even if you're just learning) and spend a little bit of cash on some new clothes. I know, I know...you want to wait until you lose "the weight", but as we've already established we don't know when that will be. It might be in a month, or a year, or you might be at a new, fairly steady set-point that isn't going to shift easily. Regardless of your personal path, you are worth the investment.
Summer is here and your thighs are about to get some sun, like it or not. Pick up a couple of maxi dresses, shorts, tanks and tees you feel great in. Tackle the seventh circle of hell (aka the bathing suit change room) by refusing to leave until you find a suit you feel hot in. Make a commitment to look your best where you are RIGHT NOW.
3. Mix up your social media
THE #1 thing you can do RIGHT NOW to improve body image is to fill your social media intake with a wide range of body types, including bodies that are your size and larger. It might feel uncomfortable at first...and most women think I'm crazy when I first suggest this....but TRUST ME. Your view of your own body (and the deep weight hate you harbor without even realizing it!!!) will start to shift.
